This is the headquarters of the Sorrento WoodCarving Co. And, if you will believe me, thewhole business is carried on just by two energetic, talented women! Ten years ago, Miss Hill introduced here in Bos-ton a peculiar kind of wood carving, to which shegave the name of Sorrento, in remembrance ofthat lovely city across the Bay of Naples, wherenearly all the population are engaged in the samesort of fret-cutting and inlaying. It was in Canada that she acquired the prettyaccomplishment; and when she opened her little up-stairs studio, on the corner of Tremont Streetand Temple Place, her object was simply to teachothers this novel, fascinating art. But the numerous pupils that applied for instruc-tion, the constant demand for new patterns and suit-able woods, together with the frequent orders forfinished work, as this effective style of ornamentation88. Boston Whittling Schools. became better known, induced Miss Hill and herfriend to enlarge their plans. How the business has grown under their ablemanagement is a long, but very interesting Miss Hill has crossed the water to securesome desired improvement in patterns or tools ; andthe saw-blades that are now used by the SorrentoWood Company come directly from Germany. Aftermany experiments they offer the public a saw-frame of their own manufacture; which, amongother advantages, admits the insertion of largerpieces of wood, and is regulated by simpler and moreeasily-turned screws. I wonder if you know just how this fret-sawingand inlaying is done. It is, to be sure, much easierthan the wood carving in relief; but, after all, itrequires a deal of skill and patience. The steel saws are sometimes as fine as a needle, and will cut, with a sharp, clean edge, the delicatelines in a pattern that seem scarcely more than ahairs breadth in size. When it is necessary
