A Catholic church- said to be more than a hundred years old- under renovation in Bingzhonglou, a tourist park on the Salween River in northern Yunnan. Established by a French missionary in the late 19th century, the church- Yesume Jiaotang, or Church of Jesus- was given 50,000 RMB (approximately $6000) as a renovation grant from the government, some locals believe compensation for damaging the building during the Cultural Revolution. The majority of worshippers at the church are Tibetan; Catholicism in the midst of a renaissance in Yunnan, according to one father, its numbers increasing three folds over the last 5 years.
