E shall not attempt to lay before our readers the wide-spreading branches of a genealogical tree—for, naturallyenough, the longer the pedigree, the more intricate thebranches thereof; but it is well that we should at leastglance over the earliest records of the Lauder family, forby so doing we come upon those valuable old chartersupon the rights and privileges of which so much stress was laid from the thirteenth to the sixteenth cen-turies—though to the generality of non-participators, they simply mean long scrolls of parchment in black-lettered Latin, almost indecipherable ; and it is fortunate for some of us when we come across any of these ancient family jewels in a modern setting.
