The engraving herewith illustrates apower reversing gear patented by J. McCarroll, and assigned to theBaldwin Locomotive Works. The gearis intended particularly for reversing thevalve motion of locomotives, but it isnot confined by the inventor to this ap-plication, as it may with suitable modi-fication be used to operate a steeringgear for vessels or any device requiringa reverse motion. It consists essen-tially of a vertical stem operated by thepistons of four cylinders arranged inopposing pairs, one pair being at rightangles to the other. This stem carriesa worm which gears with a worm-wheelwhich is threaded through the centerto receive a screw, which is throttle valve by said reversing engineat a predetermined position of saidscrew. 2. The combination with a reversingengine, a link motion, and means op-crated by said engine for raising or low-ering the link, of a pivoted arm carry-ing at one end a graduated scale andbeing at the other end attached to thelink operating means, and a stationarypointer for indicating in connection withsaid scale the position of said link. Another Locomotive Building Com-pany Dead. The Taunton Locomotive Works cor-poration had its annual meeting onWednesday afternoon, and after a thor-ough discussion of its affairs by thestockholders a vote was passed author-izing the directors to take steps toliquidate the concern.
