Periodic table element blocks. The periodic table has 118 known elements (chemical symbols) arranged by increasing atomic number to form 18 groups (vertical columns) and 7 periods (horizontal rows). Included is each element's simple electron configuration, with electrons (red) filling successive shells around the nucleus. The elements are also colour-coded by 'block', referring to the orbital type of the element's highest-energy electrons: s-block (blue), p-block (pink), d-block (yellow) and f-block (green). The expanded version of the periodic table would see the two inset rows (bottom) inserted in the two white spaces at lower left, placing Lu and Lr in the d-block.
