Molluscum contagiosum. Wart-like lesions seen on the skin of a 12 year-old girl caused by Molluscum contagiosum virus infection. Largely harmless, this infection most commonly occurs in children though it may also be sexually transm- itted by skin contact. Shiny pearl-like papules produce a cheesy fluid and a crust forms before healing occurs. The papules can appear in groups on the genitals, thighs, face or elsewhere. Molluscum contagiosum is also associated with atopic dermatitis, and is encountered as an opportunistic infection in AIDS. It usually clears up in a few months but may require medical treatment.
