Fuller, 1893. THE TENT CATERPILLAR KY CLARENCE M. WEED. MONG the many insect pests of theGranite State none is more in evidenceduring spring and early summer than theTent Caterpillar,* which for more than acentury has ravaged the orchards of NewEngland. In 1790 Samuel Dean wrotefrom Portland, Mass. : The principalinconvenience the farmer meets with fromcaterpillars is the damage they do to hisorchard. A hairy kind of caterpillarsbuild their nests on apple trees in May,and are gone entirely in June. But theyfeed so industriously on the leaves as to destroy a great part ofthem if they be not timely prevented. As they are far lessmischievous than the canker-worm, so they are more Fifty years later Dr. T. W. Harris, of Cambridge, Mass.,wrote of the caterpillars that swarm in the unpruned nurser-ies and neglected orchards of the slovenly and improvidenthusbandman, and hang their many coated webs upon the wildcherry trees that are suffered to spring up unchecked by thewayside, and encroach upon the borders of pastures and fields.
