The patient made 1916.] THE VIRGINIA MEDICAL SEMI-MONTHLY. 217 an uneventful recovery and has remained well. The mistake that was made in this casew as that other methods of diagnosing ureteralcalculi were not applied. Statistics show per cent, of urinary calculi are not de-tected by the X-ray. In these cases we haveto depend on methods other than the X-ray;for instance, the wax-tipped catheter or ure-terograms, neither one of which was used inthis case because too much! confidence hadbeen placed in the X-ray. Several chemicalagents have been used in the production ofpyelo-and ureterograms. Argyrol, collargol, silver iodide, thorium salts, and argentide sus-pended in mucilage of quince seed. I havehad no personal experience with these agents,as bad results have been reported from theuse of the first two mentioned, and the lastthree have probably not been used long enough. X-ray. Stone in pelvic portion of ureter, passedtwenty-four hours after injecting the ureter withnormal salt solution. to prove their innocence. The use of the wax-tipped catheter is a simple procedure andshould be used by everyone doing this kindof work. Ureteral calculus associated with appendi-citis is probably more frequent than one wouldimagine. There is no doubt that a great manyappendices have been removed for right-sidedpain when the symptoms were due to ureteral calculi in this location. A careful micro-scopic examination of the urine in all caseswhere the appendix is suspected would nodoubt correct a great many of these following case illustrates this point: Case 3.—Mr. C, white, age 28 years, byoccupation a mechanic. For the past year hehas had attacks of pain in the right side, which were sharp and cutting. These attacksdid not lay him up, but after an hour or twohe would resume his work. Two days agohe had a very severe attack
