Local anaesthetic. Anaesthetist injecting a local anaesthetic into the head of a brain biopsy patient. Local anaesthetics work by preventing nerves from sending signals to the brain. This is a brain biopsy operation, and requires the black frame around the patient's head to be screwed into the skull. The brain itself has no pain receptors, but the scalp and skull are very sensitive.
