Napoleon formed a mass ofprivate soldiers around him and described to them thesituation and prospects of the campaign. He thankedthem for their endurance; he described Macks situ-ation, cut off from Austria, surrounded, obliged tofight for a chance of escape ; he promised them victoryif they continued to act with resolution and speech, then characteristic of French armies,was loudly applauded by the soldiers.
