Astor Place in the East Village. Astor Place was in the nineteenth century the area of residence of the wealthy and influential New York society. Although today is a somewhat impersonal area itself, marks the boundary between Greenwich and East Village, constituting a strategic position given the attractiveness of these neighborhoods. In 1849, the English actor William Macready who played Hamlet at the Astor Place Opera House, originated a fight for criticizing her American counterpart Edwin Forrest, which killed 34 people.
