Harlington Manor House, Harlington, Bedfordshire. In the 17th century an important family in the village were the Wingate’s who settled in the manor house. Harlington House, known as the manor, is a timber framed building standing behind red brick walls at the crossroads. Edmund Wingate, Mathematician, was tutor to Henrietta Maria, Queen to King Charles I, and her sons. Charles II slept here while visiting where his old teacher had often stayed. In November 1660, John Bunyan was brought here for interrogation before Sir Francis Wingate JP. He was ready to set John Bunyan free, informing him “If you promise to call the people no more together you shall have your liberty and go home”. John Bunyan would not agree and Francis Wingate stormed out of the room. While waiting the Rector Dr William Lindal, ‘the old enemy of truth’, came in and taunted John Bunyan who was provoked until he remembered to “answer not a fool according to his folly”. Francis Wingate’s brother in law, William Foster, a lawyer from Bedford, tried to reason with him, but John Bunyan stood fast. Francis Wingate drew up a writ and after a trial at Bedford John spent twelve years in Bedford prison, where he began writing ‘Pilgrims Progress’.
