The clinical study of blood-pressure : a guide to the use of the sphygmomanometer in medical, surgical, and obstetrical practice, with a summary of the experimental and clinical facts relating to the blood-pressure in health and in disease . he instrument possesses no de-fect, save that it is not quite so readily portable as those devisedby Cook and by the author. It is an excellent and ingeniousclinical instrument. Makers.—The Arthur H. Thomas Co., southwest cornerTwelfth and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia, Pa. Cost.—Complete in carrying case, $20. B. The Authors Sphygmomanometer.—Special Construc-tion.—This instrument was devised by me after much hesita-tion, for I had no wish to increase the number of existingsphygmomanometers. It was the result of a desire to possessa really portable clinical instrument-in which, nevertheless, noessential accuracy should be sacrificed. The only originalfeature is the folding U tube manometer (A). This is shownin the plate in position for use. For carrying, the upper jointof the manometer tube is removed and sUpped through the 90 THE MODERN SPHYGMOMANOMETERS rings to the right. The open end of the U is then closed by asmall cork (F); the other end is closed automatically when the. Fio. -AUTHOIls SPHYGWOMANOMETEll. case is shut, by a block which compresses the rubber joint(G). The scale is slid down, the Politzer bag (C) removedfrom the stop-cock (E), which contains a needle-valve for slowrelease of pressure. This stop-cock is allowed to slip under a SYSTOLIC AND DIASTOLIC MEASUREMENTS 91 spring (H), as the case closes. The lid, to the under side ofwhich the manometer is fastened, is then closed by droppingthe catches which hold it behind and folding down the hingeat the left, the lower end of the lid sliding back in a whole, when closed, measures 10^ X 4f X 1^^ inches and, with the armlet and inflator, weighs 2^ pounds. The manom-eter tube has a calibre of 3 mm. and all the connections areof heavy pressure tubin
