Elizebeth Smith Friedman (1892-1980) was a brilliant cryptanalyst and pioneer in cryptology. She was married to cryptologist William Friedman and is known as "America's first female cryptanalyst." She worked with various agencies in breaking codes during WWI and WWII, and during Prohibition she cracked the codes of rum runners and international drug traffickers. (Photo circa 1940s)
