London, UK. 8th January 2017. The annual blessing of the River Thames takes place on London Bridge, in view of Tower Bridge on the first Sunday after Epiphany. This Thames tradition follows the Orthodox custom of hurling a cross into the river, as a symbol of Christ’s baptism, which is celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany. This year, the Bishop of Croydon, Jonathan Clark blessed the river, by throwing a wooden cross into it. Credit: SANDRA ROWSE/Alamy Live News
