Merano (Meran) city: facade of the beautiful historic palace "Esplanade" in the centre of the town - South Tirol-Trentino Alto Adige, northern Italy

The historically significant Palais Esplanade, built in 1767 on the Merano town walls, served at that time as an inn for merchants and travellers. After the town walls were torn down in 1878, the building was extended. A further renovation around the turn of the century, during which the building was extended to five storeys and 150 rooms, turned the former inn into a luxury hotel. In the 1970s, hotel operations were finally discontinued and a major renovation took place, which restored the building to its imperial charm. Today, the building houses public services, mostly offices and shops, and a small number of residential units.
