Monument to Edward 1st "longshanks" who died on the Solway Plain in 1307 whilst leading a campaign again Robert the Bruce.
On the 7 July 1307 at Reedy Burgh Marsh, Burgh-by-Sands Edward I,also known as Edward Longshanks,died of severe dysentry while he was leading a campaign against Robert the Bruce and his Scottish Army. St Michael's Church in Burgh-by-Sands was the place his body was laid and this is remembered by a stainded glass window in the east wall. He was taken to London and buried in Westminster Abbey. The Duke of Norfolk erected a monument in his honour in 1685 on the marsh where it is beleived he died, but was replaced in 1803 by the one you see today.
