Thecal vesicle in Symbiodinium sp. from Ph\lactis floscu- lifera. ch = chloroplast; cw = cell wall; arrow = algal cell plasma membrane; arrowhead = thecal vesicle. Scale bar = 300 nm. Just inside of the cell wall is the continuous cell mem- brane. Below this cell membrane, the freeze-substitution process has revealed distinct thecal vesicles. These vesicles are most prominent in Symbiodinium bennudense (Figs. 4, 5) and the Symbiodinium sp. (Figs. 6, 7), but they are also present in S. microadriaticum (Figs. 8, 9). In TEM sections, each vesicle is membrane bound and has rounded edges at cw ^> •\. ch.
