Highways of Communication. — Besides the greatwaterways (the Amur, Sungari, Nonni and LiaoJioJ, Manchuriahas several important land routes. The Chinese Eastern railway has been financed andconstructed by the Russo-Chinese bank. It traverses E. to , then from N. to S., from the Siberian frontierin Hehlungkiang to Port Arthur, at the Southern extremity ofRegents Sword. Entering from Transbaikalia, on the ,the line passes via Hailar, Tsitsihar and Harbin. Here it bran-ches S., passing via Changch*un ^ ^ and Mukden, and finallyending at Port Arthur. The total length of this line is 1,200miles. From Harbin, a branch runs Eastwards to Vladivostock,a distance of 300 miles within Chinese territory, and 100 inthe Russian province of Primorsk.
