They should not be planted in the open air until there is a prospect of settled warm weather; about the middle ot May. Plant in hills about four feet apart each way. Put ten or fifteen seeds in a hill, half an inch deep, and press the earth smoothly with the back of the hoe. The hills should be previously prepared by mixing thoroughly with the soil of each a shovel- ful of well rotted manure. When all danger from insects is past, thin out the plants, leaving three or four of the strongest to each hill. The fruit should be gathered when large enough, whether required for use or not, as if left to rip- en on the vines, it destroys their productiveness. For pickles, plant from June to middle of July. When small sprinkle the plants, when the dew is on, with ashes or air-slacked lime to protect them from bugs. One pound is sufficient for an Improved White Spine Cucumber. IMPROVED WHITE SPINE or ARLINGTON. For both market use and pickling this variety is now more largely grown than any other. This improved strain is vastly superior to the old White Spine.
