1st Lt. George W. Puryear, an American flier, captured in July 1918 after shooting down a German plane. He was held in various prison camps in France and Germany until Oct. 6, 1918, when he successfully escaped from Villingen. After swimming the Rhine and surrendering to the Swiss, he was aided by the American Red Cross in returning to France.
