\Cold fusion\": close-up of French CEA experimental apparatus used to investigate the results of Fleischmann & Pons, who, in March 1989, claimed to have created sustained cold fusion energy production in a simple electrolytic cell. The British & American electrochemists' \"fusion cell\" consisted of platinum & palladium electrodes in heavy water doped with lithium. This French experiment is located at Bugey, in a shielded facility suited to the detection of the high- energy neutrons that are released in nuclear fusion. The platinum/titanium cell is cooled by a refrigerant flowing through the copper pipe. The platinum gauze electrode is visible in centre."
