QUINCY ADAMS SHAW QJINCY ADAMS SHAW, the elder, was born in Bostonin 1822. He was a fine old gentleman of the oldschool of Bostonians. Rather early in life, he marriedthe daughter of Professor Louis Agassiz, who many years agowas prospecting for copper in upper Michigan and found itto the eternal gratification of his descendants. Shaw longbore the distinction of paying the largest amount in taxes tothe city of Boston. He controlled some 4,500 shares ofCalumet & Hecla stock and could exert much influence overthe 6,000 shares belonging to the Agassiz estate.
