Female Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum). This tick is the vector for two disease-causing bacteria; Rickettsia parkeri and Ehrlichia ruminantium (formerly Cowdria ruminantium). R. parkeri causes spotted fever rickettsiosis in humans. E. ruminantium causes heartwater disease, a disease of domestic and wild ruminants.
