It has sometimes occurred that an oldstake pocket has been picked up in the yard,smoothed off a little, the sand holes puttied upand the piece shellacked and used for a patternfor other pockets. This method, however, wasonly resorted to when it was necessary to get carsready for service on very short notice. Theusual custom and the proper method is to castthis pattern with a core. The procedure for thisis as follows: First the working drawing (see AND FOUNDRY PRACTICE 61 Fig. 24, a and h) should be made up full size bythe shrinkage rule.
