The acclaimed American, but British-based, painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He saw a parallel between painting and music. Among his best-known works are Whistler's Mother, Thomas Carlyle, Arrangement in Pink Red and Purple, and Mother of Pearl and Silver: The Andalusian.
