MAPLE, (May 19, 2017) Navy representatives retrieve compressed plastic disks that washed ashore during April and May from the Currituck County Sherriff’s Office. The Navy will examine the disks as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident. Under Navy policy and environmental regulations, naval ships are prohibited from discharging plastic in the ocean. Sailors are trained and instructed to separate all plastic products for processing, then retain the disks onboard until they can be properly disposed of ashore.
