The experimental results hereare something like speed- or racing-records, madeunder the best conditions of track and training. Adelicate chronograph or chronoscope is used, whichmarks the time in thousandths of a second. The method generally employed is that of a re-action experiment, already alluded to in speaking ofthe astronomical observatories and the psychologicalexperiments on personal equation. Some suitableobject is suddenly disclosed to the attentive observer,he goes through a prearranged mental operation, andimmediately at its completion moves an electric keyon which his finger has been resting. The chro-nometer records the time between the display of theobject (at which time, approximately, the mental pro-cess began) and the subjects movement which signalsthe close of the mental act. The time recorded, aftermaking certain necessary corrections to be considered. Fig. 4.— Reaction experiment. The arrangement in the subjects actual experiment the room would be darkened.
