Godin de Sainte-Croix in the Bastille. 1841 illustration depicting Godin de Sainte-Croix in the Bastille prison, Paris, France, from 'Celebrated Crimes' by the French author Alexandre Dumas. Celebrated Crimes is an eight-volume collection of essays on famous criminals and crimes from European history. Army captain Godin de Sainte-Croix was accused in 1675, along with his lover Madame de Brinvilliers, of having conspired to poison de Brinvilliers' father and two of her brothers, in order to inherit their estates.
