The name Chicago first appeared in a schoolatlas about this time. The fur trade had groAvn to veryconsiderable proportions. AVool was cultivated to some ex-tent, but commanded very low prices. In 1829, Chicagowas surveyed and platted into village lots. The legislature,sitting at Vandalia, had taken preliminary steps looking tothe construction of the Illinois and Michigan canal, but cir-cumstances arose which prevented the completion of the?work for many years afterward. In 1830, there were thirtyvotes cast in the village, Reynolds, the Jackson candidatefor governor, receiving twenty-two of them, and three-fourths of all the voters were French or half-breeds. Thejudges at the election were Russell E. Heacock, Chicagosfirst lawyer, Gen. John Baptiste Beaubien and James Kin-zie. The clerks were Medard B.
