PHILIPPINE SEA (Nov. 15, 2009) - The Japanese dock landing ship JS Shimokita (LST 4002 )steams during Annual Exercise (ANNUALEX) 21G, a bilateral interoperability exercise conducted yearly with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. Essex is commanded by Capt. Troy Hart and is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed Amphibious Ready Group and serves as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander.
