The great blue flag of Virginia on one of theInstitutes highest towers and the national colors on the other, flutterlazily in the slowly increasing breeze while an occasional roll of a drumfrom the direction of Barracks, followed shortly by the formation ofnumerous squads, show plainly that even at this early date militarydiscipline is being enforced with utmost rigor. Tramp—tramp—tramp,squad after squad is being marched out under the command of sprucelyattired corporals clad in white-and-gray uniforms. Severe but efficientdrill-masters they are, I soon perceive, as I try with fruitless efforts toperform the varied movements of the setting up exercises in companywith my future classmates.
