Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze fracture through multifidus muscle tissue (red) that has atrophied (degenerated) due to a sedentary lifestyle. The multifidus muscles run down either side of the spine and act to stabilise the lumbar (lower) spine. Muscle tissue has been replaced by fat cells (yellow). Connective tissue is grey. Magnification: x1,400 when printed at 15cm wide.
