Landslip. Illustration depicting the result of a landslip that occurred on the coast new Lyme Regis, Sussex, southern England on 24th December 1839. The year had seen particularly extended intervals of rain. This had eroded the loose sand underlying the chalk formations at the surface. This led to the chalk fracturing and sliding toward the sea. The area depicted here is about 70 metres wide and extends about one kilometre along the coast. This illustration was first appeared in the sixth edition of The Principles of Geology by Charles Lyell, published at London in 1853.
