This photo dates to around 1922 and shows a class at Jireh Swift School in the North End of New Bedford, Massachusetts,at the end of the school year and graduating to the next class. This elementary school was built in 1909 and named after Jireh Swift, a prominent merchant. He was the founder of Swift & Allen, an organization that served the whaling industry as agents, ship chandlers, and commission merchants. Swift & Allen were major suppliers of cordage, iron ware, groceries, and other goods needed to outfit whaling vessels of New Bedford and nearby ports.
