Wise had an army in theKanawha Valley, down among the mountains near the centre of theState. Wise was the governor who hung John Brown, and was thenvery severe on treason. General Cox went in pursuit of him, whenWise immediately began to retreat towards General Floyd, whowas coming from the South with more soldiers.
