The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre happened in 1572 in Paris, France (Charles IX was king). It marked the turning point in the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598) involved the assassinations of the leading Huguenots (Protestants) by Roman Catholics - and is an example of mob violence. As a result, the Huguenot political movement was severely curtailed. This illustration dates to 1916 and shows Catholics on the march against Huguenots in Paris.
