Cradock club, Cradock, Eastern Cape, South Africa.


Erected in ± 1850 and established as the Cradock Club in 1881, the same year the railway line reached Cradock from Port Elizabeth. During the Anglo-Boer War, the Club was used as a mess by the officers of the Sherwood Forresters regiment. In the from garden of the Club as well as the parking area of the adjoining Bazaars, stand Quercus Ilex Oak trees reputed to be of the oldest in the world. They were planted in 1850 by Mr. Charles Scanlen a relative of the first mayor of Cradock.
