Dr. Charles Morse, Jr. started manufacturing his Compound of Yellow Dock Root in 1850 in Providence, Rhode island. He became associated with the Rhode Island Medicine Company where he remained until about 1883. The Compound of Yellow Dock Root, Morse's "Celebrated Syrup", was used for regulating the liver and digestive organs and also for purifying the blood. It was a cure for dyspepsia, indigestion, constipation, headache, humor, and salt rheum. Yellow Dock is thought to be a general health tonic as well as to benefit the digestive tract, liver and skin. One of its primary uses by herbalists is for skin conditions associated with poor digestion, poor liver function or toxicity. Yellow dock has a mild laxative effect, due to constituents called anthraquinone glycosides. It appears to stimulate the release of bile and digestive enzymes. Yellow dock roots and preparations are used to improve conditions related to a sluggish digestive system, such as liver dysfunction, acne, headaches, and constipation.
