Longfellow's house, c1880. Longfellow (1807-1882), American poet born in Portland, Maine, is popularly remembered today for his poem Paul Revere's Ride (1863) and his long narrative poems 'The Song of Hiawatha and The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858).
