A New Alternating Current Rectifier and Interrupter. BY W. B. CHUBCIIEB, M. E. CINCINNATI, OHIO. The principles underlying the alumi-num rectifier have recently undergone aprocess of development that makes thisdevice a practical piece of apparatus. Forthe benefit of those unfamiliar with thesefundamental principles the simplest typeof rectifier will be first described. Analuminum rod when connected to the pos- itive side of a source of direct current andimmersed in a phosphate of soda solutionwith said solution in contact with an-other electrode, say of platinum, which isconnected to the negative side of the samesource of current simply, will developupon its surface a film that almost com-pletely insulates the aluminum from the. No. A RECTIFIER- CHURL HER. 109 solution. When the current is reversedso that the aluminum is negative to theplatinum the film permits the free passageof the current. II the current is againreversed the film at once insulates thealuminum from the solution. It appearsto make little or no difference how rap-idlv these reversals of current take place,as the valve action of the aluminum re-mains unchanged. It will, therefore, beunderstood thai an alternating current simple rectifier as above described. Thecurve below the 0 line represents the cur-rent that leaks from the aluminum rodat the instant it becomes positive. The Churcher Rectifier, which producesuni-directional current, is illustrated inFig. 3. This is accomplished by the aidof two aluminum electrodes instead ofone, both in the same solution with theplatinum electrode. This method of recti-fying requires the use of a transformer
