Gibi village Gurage, Ethiopia, October 2013 Maraganesh Waldemikel, 60, has four daughters and five sons. She’s preparing kocho bread from fermented enset stalks and root. This batch has been fermenting for four years. The men cut enset once a year and up to 15 women work together to prepare the kocho. “The life here is hard, it’s hand to mouth. We depend on enset products – we make rope from the fiber, we also have some animals. We need modern equipment to process the enset, it’s very labour intensive. "The mountain paths are hard for me now I’m getting older but if we had a road and electricity I’d be happy to stay here, otherwise I’d like to move to Butajera”. Her husband is a trader and lives part time in Jijega Town, Somalia, Ethiopia
