Tellina ponsonbyi is distin- guished from other South African tellens by its distinctly cancellate or reticulate sculpture. The concentric portions of the sculpture are strongest peripherally and along the posterior dorsal slope, where they may even become somewhat sub- lamellate. The synonyms Tellina rietensis and T. kraussi, introduced by Turton, were based on shape and on beach-worn ma- terial, respectively. As has been indicated in the descrip- tion, T. ponsonbyi undergoes considerable change of shape during ontogeny. Immature.
