They may be on separate, or on the same trees. Thered-forked tongues of the pistillate flowers soon wither, and the horns of the keys rise. The staminate flowers are yellow. Thekeys are more or less spreading. They are fuzzy until nearly ripe. They fall in May or earlier, and must germinate forthwithor they die. The deeply cut leaves are silver-lined. The Maples buds: axillary small; terminal larger, red, scaly. Leaves deeplycut, by deep, narrow sinuses, into 5 lobes, each of which has wavymargin, indented into secondary lobes; petioles 10 to 12 inches,slender; blades 8 to 12 inches broad and long, dark green, lustrousabove; paler beneath; turn orange-yellow in autumn. Flowersyellow, fragrant, in long racemes in late spring. Fruits pairedsamaras, ripe in autumn; ij inches long, with hairy nutlets, butsmooth wings, slightly diver
