AN IMPROVED CENTRIFUGAL PUMP. (Contributed.) The development of the steam turbine and the highefficiency multi-stage centrifugal pump have gone handin hand, but up to the present it has not been entirelypracticable to reconcile the speeds of the two machinesso that each would work at its best efficiency. It was necessary, heretofore, to reduce the speed ofthe turbine and sacrifice much of its efficiency or elsespeed up the pump with similar results. To overcomethis difficulty the Cameron Steam Pump Works, 11 Broad-way, New York, have designed and built a multi-stagecentrifugal pump, known as the BT Fig. 1—Sectional View of Three-Stage Centrifugal 2—Assembled Steam Turbine and Centrifugal Pump. Figure 1 clearly shows the construction of one ofthese three-stage pumps. The high speed feature is avirtue of impeller design. With the ordinary impellerthe diameter cannot be reduced sufficiently to get highspeed without sacrificing vane length, and, consequently, efficiency for a certain vane length is very necessary inorder that the impeller may perform its function with-out excessive loss. Small external diameter and adequatevane length are obtained in this pump, by bringing thevanes well down into the impeller hub, at the same timeso turning them that the incoming water is guidedsmoothly, and with little loss into the outer portion ofthe vanes where the velocity is generated that is finallyconverted into useful pressure by means of the external 235 diffusion vane. Additional advantages in the small im-peller are light weight and low fibre stre
