LILIUM HANSONI 31 LILIUM COLUMBIANUMis much like a small L. Humboldtii. LILIUM HANSONI (Japan), Martagon A beautiful orange Lily, bearing a number of flowerson the top of a stem about three and a half feethigh ; they are heavily spotted with purple towardsthe centre. The flowers of this Lily, though reflexed, are not curled-in as is usual with most of the Martagongroup. It is a Lily that should be more generallyknown and grown. It does well in pots. LILIUM LEICHTLINI (Japan), MartagonA beautiful pale lemon-coloured Lily, marked insidewith purple, on stems about three feet high. Thisis not a plant for every garden, but for the carefulamateur, one of whom advises that it should be grownin sandy loam lightened with peat. One reason forfailure in gardens may be that it comes out of theground early and therefore needs protection fromspring frosts. It is not a good Lily for pots, because, like L. neilgherrense, the flower-stem travels awayfrom the bulb horizontally before rising. LILIUM MARTA
