Entrance to a secret tunnel system built inside the Pljesevica mountain on the border of Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina The nuclear bunker system inside the Pljesevica mountain was built by Tito in 1947 as secret radar and communications station joined by tunnels to the military airbase in the Bihac valley below The base provided Yugoslavia with one of its key strategic defence capabilities The radar system covered half of the Balkans the airbase was capable of maintaining over one hundred fighter jets During the civil war in Bosnia the air base was taken by Croatian forces whilst the bunker system was held by the Bosnian Serb Army The tunnels down to the airbase were either destroyed or booby trapped and remain so today The site is now used by Nato troops as a communications station for their peace keeping mission in Bosnia
