Recreational Baths at Leukerbard, / Leukerbad (thermal springs) Switzerland in 1866 - eating drinking and even playing chess (right of picture ) were allowed whilst bathing at that time. - The Romans were aware of the therapeutic effect of the thermal water and In 1315, the original commune became independent and took over the baths . Through the18th and 19th centuries, though having to be rebuilt a number of times due to avalanches, the area became a popular spa resort & tourist attraction with mixed bathing being common.
