Empty chairs memorial in the snow on Jewish Heroes Square in Krakow, Poland, on the site of Zgody Square in the former Jewish ghetto in World War II


Often referred to as the Chairs of Mercy, the empty chairs represent loss and absence. The 2005 installation, in Plac Bohaterow Getta in Krakow, Poland, stands as a reminder of the persecution and murder of Millions of Jews murdered by the Nazi Party in the Second World War. The site of the 70 Bronze chair sculptures stands on the site of Plac Zgody in the Jewish Ghetto created by the Nazi's in World War II occupied Poland, which was where the deportation process of approximately 17,000 Jews were processed and sent to their fate during the liquidation of the Ghetto.
