The Female Orphan Asylum is supported partly by thecorporation and partly by private munificence. There are about 25churches, many of which are very handsome edifices. The Monu-mental Episcopal church stands upon the site of the Richmond The-atre, which was destroyed by fire, Dec. 26th, 1811, and whereby 66white and 6 colored persons lost their lives. The congregation ofthe African church is one of the largest in the Union. The Medical Department of Hampden Sidney College, founded1838, in 1850 had 7 professors, 90 students, and 40 graduates.
