The Alms-house, a spacious building, is in theNorthern suburbs. The Armory is a large edifice 320 feet long by280 wide. The Female Orphan Asylum is supported partly by thecorporation and partly by private munificence. There are about 25churches, many of which are very handsome edifices. The Monu-mental Episcopal church stands upon the site of the Richmond The-atre, which was destroyed by fire, Dec. 26th, 1811, and whereby 66white and 6 colored persons lost their lives. The congregation ofthe African church is one of the largest in the Union. The Medical Department of Hampden Sidney College, founded1838, in 1850 had 7 professors, 90 students, and 40 graduates.
